dental care without stress

At Portnoy and Tu, DDS, PC Family Dentistry, we fully understand that going to the dentist isn’t everyone’s favorite activity. In fact, for some, it’s a very nerve-wracking and fear-inducing experience. Often, dental anxiety prevents people from getting the care they need, allowing small problems to turn into big ones that require even more extensive care. Here, we do our best to ensure that every patient enjoys relaxed and soothing appointments. For patients who need a little more help feeling safe and comfortable in the dental chair, we’re happy to provide sedation dentistry. With the methods outlined below, we can help calm a patient’s mind while also fully protecting them from discomfort. If you would be interested in using sedation at your next appointment, contact us for more informations.

nitrous oxide "laughing gas"

Would you like something to just “take the edge off” of your dental nerves?

We can help you do just that with nitrous oxide sedation. Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective sedative agent that is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose to help you relax.

All a patient has to do is breathe in the colorless, odorless gas through a small nasal mask to start feeling light, happy, and even euphoric in the dental chair. The mask will stay on for the entire appointment, and when it is removed, the gas’ effects wear off almost instantly, allowing a person to quickly go back to their normal day.

Talk to our dentist about whether nitrous oxide would be a good option for you.

oral conscious sedation

Oral Conscious Sedation If you’ve avoided going to the dentist for years because of dental phobia, require extensive dental work, or both, then oral conscious sedation might be exactly what you need. With this method, one of our doctors will prescribe you a pill to take about an hour before your scheduled appointment so that by the time you sit in the dental chair, you’ll feel a deep sense of physical and mental relaxation. You’ll remain awake for your entire visit, able to respond to commands, but time will fly by very quickly, and you’ll likely have little memory afterward. Oral conscious sedation is also useful for patients who want to have multiple procedures completed in one, well-planned appointment to save time, or those who have difficulty sitting in the chair for extended periods. In any case, if you do indeed elect to use it, we will require that a friend or family member drive you to and from the office the day of your procedure as well as keep an eye on you for a few hours afterward.
